Tu meke Tuis (4.5 – 5 years)
Mā ngā huruhuru ka rere te manu – It is the feathers that enable the bird to fly.
Our transition to school,Tu meke Tui, programme, runs three mornings a week. Through our Tu meke Tui programme, our tamariki are listening to and following instructions, working at something in a focused setting for a sustained period of time, fostering a love for early literacy and numeracy, gaining knowledge and applying prior knowledge. Learning to communicate, gain confidence, work with others, and be secure in their own capabilities creates a smooth transition when they graduate and move on to primary school. We aim for our children to move to primary school, socially prepared, excited to learn, and well versed in the language, math, and science skills they’ll need to succeed.
We have a strong relationship with our local feeder schools, cementing strong relationships and a smooth transition between our centre and into primary school. We have annual parent evenings inviting teachers from these schools to share their expertise with our parents about expectations, structures and routines of the new entrant classroom. By working collaboratively, the kaiako, new entrants teachers, parents and whānau can support our children’s learning continuity as they make this momentous transition.
